Pore Formation and Mobility Investigation (PFMI)

Pore Formation and Mobility Investigation furnaceThe photo above was taken after initial on orbit installation of the PFMI furnace in the Microgravity Science Glove box on Space Station during the week ending 13 September. The PFMI apparatus melts and re-solidifies samples of a transparent modeling material to observe how bubbles form and to study their movement and interaction. During the period of July to September 2002 (Increments 5 and 6), six on-orbit experiments were successfully conducted. Additional operations are planned for Increment 8 if upmass is available for tapes to record data.
